Building a video based training site

We have recently won a contract to build a web site for a client who is offering a paid membership site offering financial training. This training is being delivered via vidoes, web casts and ebooks. The site is based on a Joomla 1.6 system for ease of maintenance. The fun part however took place last week when Clystnet started shooting the videos......

Utilising the services of our local studio in Broadclyst, we decided to film using our own high definition camera gear, but against a green screen. This gave us the ability to replace the background with any content of our choice - and in effect amke our client appear 'within' the slide he was talking about.

The following photos are stills taken on the day and show the set up and end result.

We set up the High definition camcorder on the tripod with an active microphone attached for better sound quality. Under the camera we mounted a 28" screen for prompts so that the speaker would know which slide his image would be inserted into.

We shot against a green screen - meaning that the background could be removed and replaced by the slides. This technology, common on films, has to be set up perfectly so that the editing software can cleanly remove the background. With careful lighting and the right equipment, the effect is amazing.

Tim was carefully lit so as not to produce a shadow. We filmed him slightly larger than required and then resized him as he was inserted into the final video. The slides shown on the screen mounted under the camera gave him visual queues.

Finally, using Adobe Premiere, we edited the video, dropping in the slides and overlaying the video of Tim. We exported this as an flv file which will playback on a PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone or Android device.

See the final result at www.that-figures.com when it goes live.
